Student Life :: Visit A Classroom
:: 5th grade
Welcome to 5th grade!
The 5th grade has
been taking a trip to Russell Cave for a number of years. It
is located near Bridgeport, Alabama and is an excellent example of
the types of caves the Woodland Indians lived in as far back as
1,000 A.D.. It works into our study of early Indian tribes in
Social Studies. The tour includes a walk to the cave, a video
on early Woodland life and a demonstration of weapons and tools used
by early inhabitants. The children get to try their hand at
throwing a spear using a atlatl, grinding corn and using a pump
drill.
The 5h grade also visits
Chickamauga Battlefield and Visitors Center as part of their study
of the Civil War. They get to see and touch actual clothes,
weapons and gear used by the Civil War soldiers. The gun
demonstration is always a favorite of the students.
Going to a play at the
Chattanooga Theater Center is also something the class does every
year. This year we went to see "Number the Stars," a play
based on the events involving treatment of the Jewish people during
WWII.
Near the end of the school
year the class will take a trip to Cumberland Caverns near
McMinnville, Tennessee. This is a large cave and the tour
involves a lot of walking. We have eaten our lunch in the
large dining area and have also taken the Ghost Tour where our only
light is by candles.
