Karen Colbert

1st Grade

Miss Colbert was born in Alton, IL, and reared in Edwardsville, IL. Many members of her family still live there including her brother, Bruce, his wife Karma, and their children Kelsey and Kyle. Miss Colbert attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran School. She graduated from Edwardsville High School, then when to college at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

A friend told her of a position for a second grade teacher in a Lutheran school, but it was in Chattanooga, TN. She had never been away from home before, but decided to inquire about it, anyway. She talked to the principal on a Monday, gave him an answer on Wednesday, and moved to Chattanooga on Saturday. That was over 36 years ago, and Chattanooga and the Belvoir Christian Academy have been home ever since.

For the first two years, Miss Colbert taught second grade, then in her third year she moved to third grade. During that year the Lutheran School burned down, Chattanooga suffered a severe ice storm, and parts of the city flooded. Miss Colbert decided maybe third grade wasn’t for her. She changed to teaching first grade and has been there until now except for one year teaching second grade.
